GPS To The Rescue

Sex offenders are required to wear a GPS device on their ankles so, law enforcement knows where they can be located at any time of day/night. A few days ago a man wearing such a device was chatting up a young boy and a off-duty officer noticed him wearing the gps ankle monitor at the gym that all three were at.

The officer immediately contacted his fellow officers and passed on the offenders details gathered from the Gym incharge and found out that the man was a high-risk sex-offender on parole who had been warned to stay away from youngsters. The man was detained and a search of his home revealed child pornography material.

GPS Buying Guide - Does Size Matter?

Does size matter when you are buying GPS for your car? Yes, it's important to have the gps screen big enough so you can look at it and get the directions without having to squint at it or concentrate on it while driving. Your focus should be on the road not on the GPS device. Second important point is that the voice of the GPS, should be clear and loud, so you can follow the instructions without having to strain.

Also, check that your car gps navigational device - is readable both by day and night, it's back lighting is adequate in dark interiors, the size and font of the icons and words are clear and visible under all conditions of bright and dark conditions and so on.

Use common size when buying your GPS and you won't go wrong -

GPS Tracking Device Leads Police To Thief

This is a very interesting bit of news of that I stumbled on. A vehicle that was fitted with a GPS tracking device was stolen. All the police had to do was track the vehicle using the tracking device and they were straight away on the heels of the thief. Needless to say, the thief was caught!! Now, isn't that dandy?

Interesting and useful - the gps tracking device. If you have fleet of vehicles to manage - then consider the added benefit of anti-theft -if you put in the gps tracking devices.

GPS Technology Takes Off

Every day newer and newer uses are being found for GPS technology. Customers and  manufactures are joining to find news ways to put GPS to use.

GPS For Fun involves making GPS an integral part of games and other entertainment.

GPS For Serious applications include things like finding a vet in a locality where you are driving in a completely strange city, or locating a dry cleaner before rushing to next important business meeting in a new city. And many, many more such applications. It's quite mind boggling the way some technologies just catch on. It's like ubiquituous digital watch. It just has become a part of every single device - computer, phone, radio, your music system and so on.

GPS is now catching on the to the same extent and combined with the Internet and the WWW its uses are truly mind boggling.

GPS Navigation - Use It With Common Sense And Care

A few days ago papers were reporting about the cause of a plane wreck that took 6 lives in 2004. The investigations revealed that
that over reliance of the pilot on his GPS has lead to the plane crash.

The pilot was very experienced with about 20 years flying experience. The day was a miserable cold, foggy day with very little visibility.
The GPS on which the pilot was relying had stopped receiving signals - the reasons are not known. GPS had shut down and was on simulator mode. It was giving some pre loaded directions nothing to do with where and how the plane was travelling.

The pilot had missed this crucial fact and was flying his plane straight into a tree lined ridge. The ATC assumed that the pilot was trying to land from another point. They warned him about the change of course and left it at that. By the time they found where he was heading it was too late.

The experienced pilot and his passengers had crashed into a ridge assuming they were landing at the airport all the while relying on faulty GPS signals.

A tragedy could have been avoided if pilot had checked with the ATC about his actual location and what his GPS was telling him...

There are many other funny stories how GPS has lead people astray - but this particular incident highlight how quickly a mistake can turn into a tragedy...

Mostly technology is safe and more reliable than a human being but there is no substitute for common sense. Take care use your GPS with common sense and care...

GPS Navigation Devices For Your Vehicles...

What GPS navigation devices can be used in vehicles?

Recently, a reader wrote - I'm thinking about buying a Garmin GPS to assist me while traveling. But, I'm totally ignorant about how they work and how they can help me.

I have some basic doubts like "If I'm going to 3 different places - how should I tell this to my GPS navigation. Do I have to pre-program the GPS before I set out to the three places or do I do them one at a time?

How are the addresses loaded into the GPS navigation device? Is there a input device like keyboard or pad?

Most GPSs look so small--how can I pay attention to them while I am driving?

What brand of GPS do you recommend that I should go for as a beginner with little technical or technological skills

What experiences have you had with GPS navigation and GPS devices in general?

I know I am asking a lot of questions. But I am lost, really. Thanks for your help in advance.

I will try to answer all your questions in the following paragraphs.

First, using a GPS is quite simple and easy. Most of the GPS receivers have been designed to be intuitive. They are easy to use and operate.

Like for example inputing your destination into a GPS unit is simple and straight forward. While the exact method varies depending on the GPS device you are using. For most devices, you just have to type out the address using an onscreen keyboard.

Some have touch screens and others require keypresses.

If you are going to more than one place some GPS receivers allow you to enter them at the start of your trip. While others you'll need to enter your next destination after you reach your first destination.

Again, it depends on the GPS device you are using.

First I would suggest you get comfortable with GPS receivers before you buy. Check out the various devices at your local store before you decide one.

Don't be worried about the size most have screens which are quite large enough to make out the destinations, maps, streets etc.

Most important point - you "don't have to look" at your GPS screen while driving. Your focus should always on the road and your driving. The GPS devices should not be a distraction while you drive.

For this very reason, almost all GPS receivers for cars come with voice commands. They will give your voice prompts about where you are where and which direction to turn at an interesection or which exit to take. The display typically show directional indications and limited map information.

This way they can be used for navigation while you focus on the driving. Apart from this the more advanced GPS devices even have information about restuarants, gas stations, theatres and much more.

A word of warning here don't try to program or fiddle with your GPS unit while driving. You won't type a message to a friend while driving would you? Same thing here.

Try to enter your commands before your start for your destination and perform as few as possible commands on the device while driving.
If you have to enter your commands then stop your car.

Garmin's nuvi and StreetPilot range and TomTom systems are very good. Magellan also hve pretty decent GPS systems for cars - they are the makers of the NeverLost system that are used in Hertz rental cars.

From my experience I would suggest you to get a GPS unit that not only gives voice prompts for directions, but also give the names of the streets. Instead of jus giving directions like "go left","go right" or straight it's more helpful when you know the street names too. You know you are doing the right thing. Knowing the name of the street helps significantly to follow the directional information provided by the unit..

The low cost GPS navigational models only speak directional information.

Magellan GPS Systems Applications - Part II

People GPS Tracking Systems

There are gps systems for kids and also for elderly people. These tracking devices once strapped on these individuals continuously send you signals about their location. So you can easily trace them where ever they might wandered off to.

GPS Tracking Cell Phones

Want to locate your wife in a crowded mall during Christmas shopping - use your gps tracking device. You could use your mobile phone which may be much easier. Unless the phone is switched off or the battery is completly gone. But you could use the gps feature to track her down! Many mobile phones come equipped with gps devices. Recently, a transplant patient who was in a concert and could not be reached by the hospital (the family's mobile phones were switched off) was eventually located as his mother's phone had a gps device embedded in it. Emergency services tracked them down and got them to the operating table within a short time. Time is of essence in transplant cases and organs that match a particular patient are rare to come by. GPS saved the day in this case and life of the patient literally. This potentially life saving feature will in the near future be part of all mobiles phones. A recent law will soon require all mobile phones to have this device, so you can be tracked anywhere and located in case of an emergency..

Magellan GPS Systems - Is it doomsday for GPS?

Exercepts from an article I recently read:
SiRF Technology (SIRF), a San Jose, Calif.-based maker of GPS chips, this morning said it was cutting jobs and trying to restructure its business due to softening consumer demand. Already the worst performing tech stock for the year, shares of SiRF nosedived in early trading this morning.
...
SiRF is the canary in the GPS coal mine. In other words, the GPS device market has hit the skids and we should expect more bad news, and more dominoes to tumble. Why? Look at SiRF's customers: Tom Tom, Magellan, NAVIGON, Sony and European white-label GPS maker, Binatone. If the macroeconomic trends are putting a damper on SiRF and its chip-buying posse, it isn't hard to extrapolate and see trouble for Garmin as well.
....
For the full article please click here:
According to the author of this report the party for GPS is over? Is it really over? GPS has been the hottest holiday tech device that millions of people buying. Though most people whose daily trip to the office and back along the same road and intersections don't really need a GPS device still millions bought it because it was next coolest thing. GPS has found many uses. Hard to locate holiday spots, have to drive a friend to new location that you have driven to before, have to drive to a meeting to an obscure hotel in some remote area.....well, but these are not something you encounter daily some may argue. But, isn't it about making life convenient and you are not going to buy a GPS just because you need to drive your friend a new suburb. It's because you have a GPS that you know the exact roads and the exact turns to take that you offer to take him in first place. So, is it the classic chicken and egg question. Which comes first?
What do you think? Please share your comments on - the beginning of the end for GPS ....
